There are three types of vitamin K: K1 is obtained from food, K2 is produced by intestinal bacteria and K3 is a synthetic form. Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) is a fat-soluble vitamin primarily found in leafy green vegetables such as kale, spinach, broccoli and Brussel sprouts. Indeed, its name reflects its abundant origin; ‘phyllo’ means ‘leaves’ in Greek.
Vitamin K1 contributes to normal blood clotting and is important for the synthesis of blood clotting proteins in the liver. Vitamin K1 aids coagulation and therefore affects the way in which we might bruise or bleed. Vitamin K1 is fermented into K2 by the resident bacteria of the microbiome.
