Potential applications: Anti-ageing e.g. wrinkles, wound healing, scarring, acne, post surgical tissue recovery, menopausal skin/hair health, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, fractures, connective tissue disorders, sports injuries, nerve compression and trauma, eye disorders (particularly far-sightedness), potential role in genetic disorders of premature ageing e.g. progeria.
Known contraindications: Not recommended in patients with hypertension or in cases of lymphedema due to cancer.
It has been suggested that oral HA should be avoided by those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The classic symptoms of morning stiffness in a RA patient are caused by an autoimmune reaction degrading HA during sleep.
Interactions: Due to the hydrophilic (water attracting) nature of HA it is not recommended alongside the use of diuretic medication.
Side Effects: Regular fluid ingestion, at least 2 litres of water daily, is important for those using HA.

Note: Hyaluronic acid is a member of the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) family and is comprised of linear, unbranching, polyanionic disaccharide units consisting of glucuronic acid and n-acetylglucosamine joined alternately by beta 1,3 and beta glycosidic bonds.
